Remote Pressure Monitoring

A pressure number is useful. A pressure trend with operating context is better.

Remote pressure monitoring should help a field team decide which assets are normal, which deserve attention and which require a person on site.

Where pressure telemetry adds value

Common applications include wellhead, tubing, casing, flowline, vessel and process pressure. The specific location matters because each pressure point tells a different story. Monitoring should start with the process question, then choose the sensor range and location that can answer it.

Choose the sensor range for the actual operating envelope

A sensor should cover expected operating pressure and credible excursions without sacrificing useful resolution. The complete installation also needs appropriate process connection, materials, environmental protection and wiring for the classified or unclassified area where it will be installed.

Sampling and reporting are not the same thing

A device can sample locally more often than it transmits data. That distinction is useful for battery-powered systems because the cellular transmission can consume more energy than the sensor reading itself. The correct interval depends on how fast the pressure can change and how quickly the operator needs to respond.

Use alarms sparingly

Every alarm should have an owner and an expected action. Warning thresholds can identify a developing trend while action thresholds identify a condition that requires intervention. Deadbands or hysteresis can reduce repeated notifications when a value moves around a boundary.

Trend review often creates more value than a single high/low alert

A slow pressure decline, gradual build or repeated cycle pattern may matter even when the value never crosses an alarm threshold. Historical trends let engineering and operations review how the site behaved before a failure, shutdown or weather event.

Know where the control layer belongs

If pressure is part of a safety shutdown, closed-loop control, compressor logic or another critical automation function, keep the appropriate engineered control system in place.
