How to turn an approved gas meter pulse into useful remote telemetry.
The hard part is usually not counting the pulse. It is confirming exactly what the signal represents, who is authorized to use it and how to validate the resulting volume record.

A pulse output is an electrical event associated with a defined increment of measured volume or another configured quantity. Depending on the meter, index, corrector or flow computer, one pulse might represent a small volume or a much larger quantity. The pulse factor must be confirmed from the actual equipment configuration, not inferred from a meter face alone.
Common output interfaces
Field equipment may provide dry-contact closures, isolated relay contacts, open-collector outputs, solid-state outputs or digital communications. These interfaces are not interchangeable. The receiving device must be electrically compatible and must not load or disturb the measurement equipment.
When a utility or measurement department owns the meter, obtain authorization before connecting anything. In some installations the approved monitoring point is a barrier relay or isolated auxiliary contact rather than the meter electronics themselves.
Pulse factor and engineering units
The telemetry system needs a clear relationship between pulse count and reported volume. Store that factor with the meter identity so future reports can explain how accumulated pulses became CCF, MCF or another reporting unit. If a volume corrector is involved, determine whether the pulse represents uncorrected or corrected volume.
How to validate a new telemetry installation
- Record the meter or corrector total before the test period.
- Record the telemetry pulse count and configured pulse factor.
- Allow enough real usage to generate a meaningful change.
- Record the trusted meter total again.
- Compare expected volume with telemetry volume and investigate any mismatch before relying on the data operationally.
What remote pulse monitoring is good for
Once validated, interval pulse data can support daily usage reporting, customer-side energy visibility, multi-site comparison, operational trending and historical exports. It can also reduce the need for manual reads where the primary purpose of a visit is to obtain the meter total.
